Understanding Jewelry: Some Useful Descriptions

Anyone who has a love if fine objects will inevitably be drawn to jewelry. However, to truly appreciate these tiny works of art and craftsmanship, an individual should posses at least a rudimentary understanding of certain styles and meanings. For example, if someone has passion for wines, they undoubtedly would know the difference between a Merlot and a Chardonnay. Therefore, if someone wishes to attain a knowledge of jewelry, they should probably know what estate jewelry is versus antique.

Antique jewelry may be considered estate. However, estate doesn’t necessarily mean antique. Basically, the definition of estate jewelry means that the jewelry was once owned by another individual. Many buyers are under the false assumption that this represents antique, and will shop in accordance with this idea. They may see some Art Deco rings and be under the assumption that it meets the hundred year requirement to posses the title of antique. That’s not to say that they wouldn’t be a valuable objects. They may very well be. However, it can be disheartening to later discover that what was once thought to be a treasured and valuable antique may in fact be only eight or ninety years old.

With this in mind, a ring’s value doesn’t necessarily depend upon it’s age. Understand that many different factors apply upon the appraisal of it’s worth. Just because a ring is an antique doesn’t mean that it holds a great deal of value. When visiting an antique shop, you will find many pieces of jewelry at varying prices. Instead of misunderstanding the definitions, you are encouraged to do your research so that you may be armed with all of the information necessary to make a safe investment.
